City Rules and Customs

How do I get promoted?

  • All promotions are by invitation.
  • Staffers will be happy to discuss the process and assist you in your progress.
  • It's up to you to demonstrate deservingness for its own merit -- not for the purpose of being promoted.
  • How can I show deservingness?
    • Be active in the city, in public social areas.
    • Slaves should serve eagerly and challenge themselves, and Free should show honorable, civil, and knowledgeable conduct.
    • Attend practice and discussion sessions.
    • Ask a staffer for an appointment, if you aren't available at scheduled times.

How do I collar a slave?

  • Except in certain cases, all slaves must be purchased from the city.
  • Slaves can only be purchased after earning black silks.
  • Both parties must be certified citizens of Baren Touhk.
  • When the .collar command is used, the slave will be asked for consent to be collared by the system.
  • Freepersons who collar a slave without negotiating with City staff will be charged by staff for the purchase.

I own a slave elsewhere, can I own her here?

  • The city honors pre-existing Master/slave ownership relationships in other realms.
  • Both parties must be certified citizens of Baren Touhk.
  • Staff may, at their descretion, require proof of the pre-existing ownership relationship.

Connection Issues

Host Not Found

  • Check that you are connecting to the hostname barentouhk.com, not a numeric IP address. The IP address is subject to change from time to time.
  • Be sure you are using port 3050.
  • If you are a comcast subscriber, or customer of another ISP whose DNS caching servers do not update frequenly, you may need to temporarily use the IP address. You can find the current IP address using tools like dnsstuff.com. Unfortunately, if your ISP is broken in this manner, you'll have to manually update the IP address from time to time.

Specific Talker Clients

Zmud

  • Do not check "Use IP Address" in your character properties screen. This will lock in the IP address that is in use at that time, and if it changes, your connection settings will not follow the change. Always use the host name and not the IP address (unless your ISP's DNS is broken, in which case you will have to manually keep up with changes; see above).
